These are iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Max, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The new iPhones will differentiate themselves with screen size, camera technology, and materials used.

iPhone 12 is Apple’s first 5G iPhone. Now here’s everything you need to know about the latest iPhone models.

iPhone 12 Release Date

Apple is expected to launch the “iPhone 12” in four distinct models at an October 13 event at 10 a.m. PT. (1 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. BST). The launch event usually takes place in September, but it has been pushed back to October due to pandemic.

iPhone 12 pre-orders could begin that Friday on October 16, and the first iPhone 12 shipments and an official launch could happen on October 23.

iPhone 12 Pricing

All four iPhone 12 phones coming in various memory combinations and will cover a wider range of prices. The iPhone 12 mini will start at $649, with the highest price tag being $1,399 for an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

iPhone 12 Specs & Features

When October 13 rolls around, expect to see the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 Mini, 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro, and the whopping 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max- all of which are said to have OLED screens.

Design & Colors

iPhone 12

The new iPhones will feature an overhauled design with a metal frame that’s similar to the iPhone 4 frame. An old design paradigm might be returning in 2020 by making the sides flat rather than rounded-off.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that the 2020 iPhones will use a more complex segmentation design, and new trenching and injection moulding procedures.

Multiple sources claim that the overall design will resemble the iPhone 4 or iPad Pro with a squared-edged stainless steel frame between two pieces of glass. The new iPhone will feature a stainless steel frame, which will replace the current rounded stainless steel frame, and it will continue to use front and back glass for the body of the device.

The flat design would help Apple keep the physical size of the phone down, narrowing those bezels and letting the screen fill more of the body.

Also, the move to 5G on the iPhone will require a change in motherboards to larger and more expensive versions.

According to the rumours, the 6.7-inch model, and one of the two 6.1-inch models, will be the high-end variants with triple-lens cameras and 5G capability. The smallest 5.4-inch model, and the cheaper 6.1-inch, will be classed as ‘affordable’ iPhones.

Rumour suggests the iPhone 12 models could come in light blue, violet, and light orange, among other colours.

One of the most important specifications of the iPhone 12 is that it is supported by the A14 Bionic processor from Apple accurately manufacturing (7 nm +), a hexa-core processor and includes a graphics processing unit (Apple GPU).

iPhone 12 Camera

The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will feature a triple camera system with a LiDAR scanner, like the one on the iPad Pro 2020. The sensor helps judge distances accurately, and this leads to better-augmented reality and portrait mode.

These high models are also expected to boast improved Smart HDR functionality for better low-light photography. There’s also 3x optical zoom feature, which will be an improvement over iPhone 11’s 2x zoom capability.

Talking about the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini, they will likely come with a dual-camera system and no LiDAR scanner.

We can expect the standard iPhone 12 to feature a 12MP wide and 12MP ultrawide lens, whereas the Pro models will get an additional 12MP telephoto camera.

All new iPhone models will reportedly have a 7-element wide-angle lens, which should result in less distortion and fewer aberrations.

The 2020 iPhone lets you shoot 4K videos at 120fps and 4K slow-motion clips at 240fps.

5G and Wireless Connectivity

5G network

Apple will likely upgrade from 4G LTE to 5G in the next-generation iPhones. Though Apple has not announced yet, rumours suggest that all models of it will offer 5G capability.

5G connectivity on the new iPhone will likely be provided by the Qualcomm’s X55 modem, a second-generation 5G modem that can connect to both millimeter-wave and lower-frequency 5G networks.

5G is roughly ten times faster than the older 4G connection, and reduces download times to mere seconds instead of minutes.

Well, it is not clear if the iPhones will receive mmWave or sub-6Ghz versions of 5G. Some rumours report that all models will receive the sub-6GHz band, as it covers the widest range at the longest distance even if it is slower overall.

iPhone 12 battery capacities:

  • iPhone 12 Mini (5.4 inches) – 2,227 mAh
  • iPhone 12 (6.1 inches) – 2,815 mAh
  • iPhone 12 Pro (6.1 inches) – 2,775 mAh
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7 inches) – 3,687 mAh

You will note that these batteries aren’t actually much bigger than the iPhone 11 batteries, and a couple of them are even smaller by comparison. Hope it doesn’t mean diminished performance.

Other Leaks

This year could be the first time we see iPhones with more than 4GB of RAM. The iPhone 12 Pro series might come with 6GB of RAM, while iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 will have 4GB of RAM.

The standard iPhone 12 models will continue to use an aluminium housing, and the Pro models will stick with a stainless-steel housing.

Apple will be revealing the new iPhone 12 on October 13 at 6pm BST.
